Relaxation
Come! Come through this doorway with me…if you wish. Those of you who wish to read should do
so, and those of you who have either read this already, or who have the opportunity to listen, might prefer to close your eyes.
Of course, you don’t have to close your eyes, but I always think you can see better and hear better and feel better – even taste
and smell more effectively – if you close your eyes. I leave it up to you – close your eyes or not – your choice. Either way,
I invite you to come with me through this doorway to another world – a world of altered states of consciousness; and you know
that you have experienced altered states of consciousness many times – like when you daydream or gaze out of the window
or drive on “automatic pilot” – like when you are suddenly somewhere else and don’t remember getting there or how you can
disappear inside a book sometimes and really identify with the characters – almost become one of them.
As you sit still here, I ask you to remember back to an occasion when you were relaxed – in fact, very relaxed –
and I invite you to walk through this doorway opening up for you, so that you can be right back there again.
And I wonder what you can see there? Is it bright or dull, clear or hazy? What colours are present?
What about the size of objects, their shape, their distance from you and from one another? Are you there alone –
or with other people?
And I wonder what you can hear there? Are the sounds LOUD or quiet, high-pitched or low-pitched?
Is-there-any-rhythm-to-the-sounds…any…pauses? Do the sounds come from people, machinery or nature?
And I wonder what you can feel there? Is it hot or cold or somewhere pleasant in-between?
What do your clothes feel like? What does the ground feel like if you are standing…or what you are sitting on…or lying on…
what does that feel like? And because you are recalling a relaxing event, your heartbeat is likely to be slower, and so your pulse
will be slower, and your breathing will be slower.
And are there any special tastes or aromas or scents associated with being here?
If you are looking at this event as if you were looking at a picture, I invite you to step inside your own younger
body and be there again. Because you are using your imagination, you can change things, like the colours of objects,
or the volume of sounds or the temperature. You can add people or take people away. In fact, you can do anything you
like to make this event as relaxing as possible, and I invite you to do that now…
You will know you are relaxed because there is that special feeling that you associate with being relaxed.
For some people, this is a light feeling, whilst for others it is a heavy feeling, or it may be some other feeling which you are
experiencing right now. Either way, I invite you to imagine this feeling concentrated on the top of your head. And you can allow
that feeling to begin to spread down over your forehead and into your eyes, and all the muscles around your eyes. And that feeling
can continue to move down your face and into your mouth and all the muscles around your mouth – all the muscles used for eating
and breathing and smiling and laughing and talking – so that your mouth can be very relaxed. And that same feeling can move
down into your neck and your neck can become so very relaxed – your neck which is normally so important for holding your head up.
You can allow your neck to become so relaxed that you might like to allow your head to just drop forward as you become even more
deeply relaxed.
And that same feeling of relaxation can spread through your shoulders and go all the way down, deeper
and deeper, down through your arms, going all the way deeper and deeper down through your arms and into your hands,
and spreading through your hands into your fingers, right to the very tips of your fingers.
And that same feeling can spread down through your chest, your back, your stomach and, through your groin,
into your legs. You can allow that feeling to carry-on moving down, deeper and deeper and all the way down through your legs
and into your feet, spreading right out to your toes…so that you can be very deeply relaxed.
And even although you are very deeply relaxed, you can take that feeling and you can double it…and you can do that now…
and you can take that new feeling and double it again and again and again until you feel extremely relaxed…and I invite you
to take a few moments to do that now……
Take your time to enjoy this level of relaxation. Know that you can return to this state whenever you wish
and whenever you feel safe to do so. In a moment, but not yet… In a moment, I will invite you to return to the room you are
physically in and, when you do, you will be able to bring these good feelings of relaxation with you. If you have chosen to close
your eyes, you may have difficulty in opening them, but when I count to three, you will be able to do so easily.
So, take a deep breath and feel all the normal feelings return to your eyes, your mouth, your head, neck,
arms, hands, fingers, chest, back, stomach, groin, legs, feet, toes – every part of your body – as you return to this room,
coming back now. And when you are ready, one, two, three.
